If the number of petition signatures being verified remains at the current rate, an effort to protect marriage in Washington state will appear on the November ballot.
The effort is aimed at overturning a domestic-partnership law by letting voters decide.
Because it’s ordinary for some signatures to be rejected, Protect Marriage Washington turned in 137,689 when only 120,577 were needed to qualify. After 35,000 names were checked, the rejection rate was 11.5 percent. If that level is sustained for the rest of the petitions, the referendum will appear on the ballot.
