Evangelicals Craft Document on Global Warming Alarmism

by CitizenLink Staff

The Cornwall Alliance, one of the most prominent voices in America and internationally on issues of religion and environment, has created a statement of faith for Christians on global warming.

An Evangelical Declaration on Global Warming explains what the Bible says about God’s creation, its ability to renew itself and how global warming alarmism will harm the poorest nations.  The document is supported by a recent study commissioned by the Cornwall Alliance, A Renewed Call to Truth, Prudence and Protection of the Poor:  An Evangelical Examination of the Theology, Science and Economics of Global Warming.

Christian scholars and experts are being encouraged to sign the document.  Tom Minnery, senior vice president for government and public policy at Focus on the Family Action, added his name.

“There is some confusion about how Christians should respond to global warming,” he said.  “The Cornwall Alliance has done an excellent job of articulating a responsible Christian stewardship of the world, grounded in sound biblical teaching.  Their work is a refreshing antidote to the godless junk science and opportunistic policy being floated these days.”

E. Calvin Beisner, Ph.D., national spokesman for the Cornwall Alliance for the Stewardship of Creation, said belief in a wise and faithful God prevents an overreaction to the issue.

“An accurate understanding of climate shows that it declares the glory of God, not the folly of someone who would make a system bound to collapse with the slightest nudge,” he said.  “And an accurate understanding of energy economics demonstrates that the policies promoted to fight alleged dangerous, manmade global warming would be devastating to the world’s poor. By driving up energy prices, they would delay for generations the time when the 2 billion people in the world who now live without electricity and therefore use wood and dung as their primary cooking and heating fuels, getting tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases from the smoke…can be delivered from such misery.”
