The U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted 8-1 Wednesday in favor of domestic-partner benefits. The bill (S. 1102) allows same-sex partners of federal employees the same access to health, retirement and pension benefits as married spouses.
Ashley Horne, federal policy analyst for Focus on the Family Action, said it comes with a price tag.
“Congress passed a long time ago the Federal Defense of Marriage Act – meaning marriage is between one man and one woman for purposes of federal law,” she said. “Giving same-sex partners the same legal standing as married couples for purposes of federal benefits directly undermines the Defense of Marriage Act.”
