Health care bill will hurt families, force pro-life Americans to pay for abortion

by CitizenLink Staff

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Focus on the Family Action Federal Issues Analyst Ashley Horne released the following statement in response to the House vote approving the health care bill that includes federal funding of abortion.

“Today Congress blatantly ignored the overwhelming opposition to this healthcare bill. Instead of fixing what was broken in the healthcare system, Democrats ushered in an overhaul of one-sixth of our nation’s economy, higher taxes and billions of dollars in cuts of Medicare coverage.

“More appalling, however, is the fact that House Democrats also ignored the voices of tens of millions of Americans who believe federal funding of abortion is wrong. They changed 30 years of law protecting Americans of pro-life convictions from being forced to pay for something that violates their personal and, in many cases, religious convictions.

“President Obama’s executive order does not offer meaningful or permanent protection for preborn life, so it is disappointing pro-life representatives caved to its empty promise. Executive orders don’t have the force of law, don’t direct the private sector, and can be rescinded by future administrations. The order instead serves as an admission that the healthcare bill is not abortion neutral.

“By voting this bill through, Democrat supporters of healthcare reform will end up hurting families and facilitating the destruction of preborn life – despite the many objections of the men and women they represent.”
