Think again

by Daniel Weiss

Concerned Women for America’s Dr. Janice Crouse wrote a good piece examining the legalization of prostitution. If you’ve ever thought that argument made a certain amount of sense, read her commentary. Here is one powerful argument against it:

“Legalization creates greater demand for younger girls, who the johns think are less likely to have an STD. Those who think that legalizing prostitution ends sex-trafficking are wrong; legalization merely increases demand and throws open the floodgates of child prostitution.”

I do think you’re missing the point. I am very conflicted on the matter of prostitution, but legalising it will remove pimps from the equation. Moreover, any sensible legislation on the topic will make safer-sex practices the law and make sex-workers undergo regular STI screening, so it’s silly to say that johns will want to hire little girls. Also legalising prostitution will not take away the statutory protections that keep children safe from sexual abuse of any kind.

There are lots of real issues surrounding prostitution, but this is most certainly not one of them.

Lia, Thanks for writing. I thought your comment deserved a longer response. I posted that here.
