Reps. Frank, McDermott Work to Decriminalize and Tax Internet Gambling

by CitizenLink Staff

U.S. Reps. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and Jim McDermott, D-Wash., continue to push for decriminalizing online gambling and placing a federal tax on Internet gambling commerce.

They are desperate, as the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) regulations, which enforce existing laws against illegal, online gambling in the U.S., are set to take effect at the beginning of June.

Frank and McDermott introduced their bills last year, but they have not had a favorable response. In fact, a recent national poll found that two-thirds of Americans want Internet gambling to remain illegal.

Despite public opposition to Internet gambling, Frank and McDermott will attempt to pass their bills in the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday.

Chad Hills, analyst for gambling research and policy at Focus on the Family Action, said: “States determine what forms of gambling are legal within their borders — not the federal government. Americans don’t want federal Internet gambling shoved down their throats, nor do they want thousands of virtual online casinos invading their homes. We’re saying, ‘No!’ but Rep. Frank’s not listening.”
