The Illinois State Treasurer is allowing his employees to access even more domestic-partner benefits.
Sandy Rios, president of the Culture Campaign, said Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias is disrespecting people in the state who strongly support traditional marriage.
“They don’t have any opportunity to vote on this,” she said, “and it is wrong for some elected official, not even the governor, to issue such as executive order.”
The move goes against the Legislature’s enactment of a Defense of Marriage Act.
“We believe that marriage in Illinois is between one man and one woman,” Rios said.
Rios said she is convinced Giannoulias’ action is a political statement in his run for U.S. Senate.
“The bad news,” she said, “is he’s not going to endear himself to the people of Illinois by attacking marriage.”
