Tim Gill Hosts Private Donor Meeting; Governors from Key States Attend

by Catherine Snow

Gill is known for his stealthily successful donor strategy, which resulted in the defeat of numerous pro-family candidates around the country –and the advancement of the gay movement’s priorities.

Gov. John Lynch, R- N.H., who is running for a fourth term as governor, seems to exemplify the power that Tim Gill wields at election time.

Gill – the Denver-based, gay entrepreneur, multimillionaire and political benefactor – is known for his stealthily successful donor strategy, which resulted in the defeat of numerous pro-family candidates around the country –and the rapid advancement of the gay movement’s priorities.

According to a Washington Blade report, Lynch was the keynote speaker at the Gill Fund’s “Political OutGiving” conference, held in May at the Peninsula Hotel in Chicago.

Also in attendance were Democrat Govs. Michael O’Malley of Maryland, Ed Rendell of Pennsylvania and Chet Culver of Iowa – three states that are in the cross hairs of gay activists.

One month prior to the meeting in Chicago, Lynch chastised the National Organization for Marriage for spending money on television ads calling him out for his flip-flopping on same-sex marriage. He summarily told the N.J.-based organization to stay out of local politics.

Kevin Smith, executive director of the N.H.-based Cornerstone Policy Research said Lynch’s attendance at the conference is the height of hypocrisy, but is not surprising at this stage.

“The irony here is that the National Organization for Marriage’s television ads focused on Lynch’s lack of integrity and his inability to tell the truth,” said Smith. “Whether it was on spending or marriage, he would say one thing to constituents, but then do the opposite.”

Gill’s influence of Lynch is dramatic and noteworthy.

For most of Lynch’s career, he was against same-sex marriage. In fact, in a 2006 gubernatorial debate, Lynch said, “I do not support gay marriage.”

Yet, when a same-sex marriage bill passed out of the N.H. Legislature in 2008, Lynch flipped on the issue and signed the bill into law.

“People are really seeing his true colors,” said Smith. “It is really remarkable how far he has come on just this one issue. We knew the Legislature was tied to the gay donors and advanced their agenda; but now we know that Lynch is involved as well.”

To date, Lynch has failed to poll above 50 percent against any of the four candidates vying in the Republican primary on September 14.
