Shackelford Named as one of Texas’ Greatest Lawyers in Past 25 Years

by CitizenLink Staff

Texas Lawyer – a pre-eminent legal magazine – recently named Kelly J. Shackelford, president and chief counsel of Liberty Institute and the Free Market Foundation, as one of the state’s greatest attorneys in the past quarter-century.

Shackelford – a constitutional attorney — is renowned for his legal prowess in defending religious liberties and won two separate landmark religious liberty cases in the Texas Supreme Court: Penley v. Westbrook and HEB Ministries, Inc., et al. v. Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, et al.

More recently, Shackelford helped raise national religious freedom awareness when he represented the caretakers of the Mojave cross – a war memorial located in the Mojave Desert. The cross was the focus of a decade-long court battle.

Tom Minnery, senior vice president of CitizenLink, said, “Kelly is among the best and brightest in the national social conservative movement, and he works very ably in two difficult arenas—policy and legal. He’s a beloved colleague, and we’re blessed to have him on our side.”
