Online Gambling Passes Out of Committee, Sent to House for Consideration

by CitizenLink Staff

The U.S. House Financial Services Committee passed, 41–22, legislation today that would repeal the Unlawful Internet Gambling Expansion Act (UIGEA) – a four-year-old law banning Internet gambling.

The measure now heads to the full House for consideration.

During the bill’s markup, Rep. Spencer Bachus – ranking member on the committee – reiterated his concerns that legalized gambling would harm society.

“With this bill, in one broad stroke, we will allow every child in America to gamble on their home computer or in their dorm room,” said the Alabama Republican.
