Pro-Family Legal Group Receives Important United Nations Status

Posted by Catherine Snow

The United Nations recently granted the Alliance Defense Fund, a special consultative status, allowing its attorneys to attend, participate – and even influence –policies affecting religious freedoms, the sanctity of life, marriage, and the family.

“Considering the increased global effort to promote abortion and other actions contrary to the right to life and family, ADF’s participation at the U.N. is good news,” said Yuri Mantilla, Focus on the Family’s director of international affairs.

“The U.N. plays a critical role in determining future policies affecting religious liberty,” said ADF Senior Legal Counsel Roger Kiska. “It is vital for a legal alliance like ADF to have input on those policies to ensure they affirm real human rights and freedoms. ADF will now be able to monitor and provide input on matters affecting those freedoms.”

The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), which granted ADF its special status, was established by the U.N. to coordinate economic and social projects, programs and policy recommendations within the U.N. structure.

To date, the ECOSOC wields enormous influence, as it affects nearly 70 percent of U.N.’s human and financial resources.

According to its website, the ECOSOC is responsible for:

  • promoting higher standards of living, full employment, and economic and social progress;
  • identifying solutions to international economic, social and health problems;
  • facilitating international cultural and educational cooperation; and
  • encouraging universal respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

“ADF will be able to promote and defend true human rights – the right to life, the right to family and the right to religious freedom – in a setting where world diplomats are seeking to find solutions that will help their countries,” said Mantilla.

“ADF believes – and history proves – that the respect for life, marriage and religious freedom are the essential foundations for any society to succeed.  They will be able to advocate from a Christian perspective, which is based on the fact that each human being has been created in God’s image and not on moral relativistic principles.”

ADF is already accredited with the Fundamental Rights Agency, the European Parliament, and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
