U.S. House to Vote on ‘No-Lame-Duck Session’ Resolution Tuesday

by Catherine Snow

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is calling lawmakers back from the August recess, and one of the items they will vote on is a “No Lame Duck Session” resolution.

The resolution, offered up by Republican Study Committee Chairman Tom Price, R-Ga., calls on his colleagues “not to assemble on or between the dates of November 2, 2010 and January 3, 2011, except in the case of an unforeseen, sudden emergency requiring immediate action from Congress.”

Based on the assumption that Republicans will win back the majority in the House on Election Day, the goal is to stop a rush of bills from being passed in the final days before the Democrats hand over control.

The resolution may be voted on as early as Tuesday.

“Americans should know where their representatives stand on the issues before going into the voting booth,” Price said. “But, Speaker Pelosi and Senator Reid have delayed dealing with a number of far-reaching and controversial issues until after Election Day, precisely so Democrats do not have to reveal to the electorate their support for more trillion-dollar deficits, tax hikes on families and small businesses, and a job-killing national energy tax. You still do not know what your 2011 tax burden will be for the same reason.

“If the Democrat leadership is willing to bring lawmakers back to Washington, in order to pass billions more in ‘stimulus’ spending with tax hikes on job creators, the least they can do is tell the American people that they will not bring lawmakers back for a lame duck session to pass additional tax increases, deficit spending, and special interest giveaways.”
