Several gay- and lesbian-identified college and university presidents gathered in Chicago last week to discuss the issue of diversity.
In addition to creating a new organization – LGBTQ Presidents in Higher Education – and professional and leadership development at all levels of academia, those in attendance agreed that a top priority should be “to push higher education to include issues of sexual orientation when talking about diversity.”
This comes at a time when students and faculty members are increasingly under attack – and even expelled or fired – for expressing religious beliefs that uphold a biblical view of sexuality.
Counseling Student Julea Ward at Eastern Michigan University –who was expelled – and Dr. Kenneth Howell at the University of Illinois –who was fired, then reinstated –are just two recent examples of the move in higher education toward political correctness – and the silencing of beliefs.
Candi Cushman, education analyst for CitizenLink, said most parents probably would disagree with expensive colleges becoming centers for homosexual activism.
“One of these presidents said he views ‘advocacy’ as the role of a college president,” said Cushman. “I’m not sure most parents would agree. Isn’t the role of a college president to promote the highest quality environment for academic learning and freedom?”
