Pro-Life Group Calls for Family Values Plank in Republican Legislative Blueprint

by CitizenLink Staff

The Susan B. Anthony List (SBA List) launched today its “Life Speaking Out” campaign to encourage House Republicans to add a family values plank to its economy-laden Legislative Blueprint – expected to be released after Labor Day.

The 1994 “Contract with America”–which jumpstarted the “Reagan Revolution”–failed to include pro-life or “family values” legislation.  The SBA List, which seeks to cultivate and support pro-life candidates, wants to warn Republicans – who are poised to take control of the House in November –ignore pro-life and family value issues at their own political peril.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of SBA List, said that any legislative blueprint must include a “family values” plank, which would include legislation that protects women from the violence of abortion, as well as taxpayers against paying for it.

In a letter to leadership, Dannenfelser wrote :

It would be an electorally costly mistake for the future for the GOP to write off one leg of the three-legged stool of Ronald Reagan conservatism – a sure way to divide the party right before the critical midterm elections.

“With the majority of Americans labeling themselves ‘pro-life,’ and with an even stronger majority agreeing that tax dollars should not fund abortion, the consensus for passage of serious pro-life legislation could not be stronger,” Dannenfelser said. “Real leaders multi-task. The strongly pro-life GOP leadership should be able to respond to the economic crisis and enact pro-life legislation.”
