New Poll Finds Large Majority of New Mexico Voters Do Not Support Legalization of Recreational Marijuana

 SANTA FE — Today, a poll conducted by Emerson College and released by Smart Approaches to Marijuana found that a large majority of New Mexico voters do not support the full legalization of recreational marijuana. According to the poll:

  • More than 63 percent of New Mexico voters do not support the full legalization of recreational marijuana when given a full spectrum of policy options;
  • 42 percent of voters support the status quo in New Mexico—marijuana decriminalization and legal medical marijuana;
  • 22 percent of voters favor keeping marijuana illegal for use and possession; and
  • Just 34 percent of voters favor full legalization.

‪“New Mexico voters recognize that our state is already facing major challenges related to homelessness, crime, drug use, poverty, and mental health,” said Vince Torres, Executive Director of Family Policy Alliance of New Mexico. “Therefore, it comes as no surprise that they largely oppose recreational pot which is known to further aggravate these issues.”

The results of the poll counter recent reports from the Governor’s Legalization Working Group suggesting that three out of four New Mexicans support full legalization. Family Policy Alliance of New Mexico formally requested the Working Group’s poll through a public records request. The Governor’s Office and the Group’s Chairman, however, refused to release the documents.

“From the very beginning, the Governor’s Working Group was so set on developing a proposal that would appease the pot industry, that they neglected the data and statistics from other states demonstrating the negative impacts of recreational marijuana on public health and safety,” Torres added. “This poll proves that when New Mexicans are made aware of these harms, they oppose legalization. In the coming weeks, we will be working hard to make sure that citizens and lawmakers know the facts about recreational pot and the efforts by ‘Big Marijuana’ to conceal the truth.”
