Pro-Life Coalition Launches Statewide Petition Opposing Radical Abortion Legislation in 2020

Calls on Governor and Legislature to End Abortion Up-to-Birth and Infanticide

ALBUQUERQUE — Today, Family Policy Alliance of New Mexico, Right to Life Committee of New Mexico, and New Mexico Alliance for Life launched a statewide petition urging Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and the New Mexico Legislature to “protect and uphold the dignity of all people by promoting the sanctity and prosperity of all human life, through all stages of development.” Despite the fact that an overwhelming majority of New Mexicans oppose abortion after 5 months, Governor Lujan Grisham and the sponsors of the defeated bill, House Bill 51, have vowed to bring the legislation back during the January 2020 budget session.

“House Bill 51 exposed the dark realities of abortion in New Mexico, including abortion up-to-birth and infanticide,” said Vince Torres, Executive Director of Family Policy Alliance of New Mexico. “The abortion industry will once again be pushing this legislation in 2020 and this petition is just the first step in our efforts to thwart their radical abortion agenda.”

During the 2019 Legislative Session, Democrats and Republicans in the New Mexico Senate soundly defeated House Bill 51 which would have codified abortion up to the moment of birth in state law. The petition calls on the Governor and the Legislature to again reject this legislation and work to address the concerns of most New Mexicans.

“Earlier this year, the people of New Mexico rose up and demanded that they be heard,” said Ethel Maharg, Executive Director of Right to Life Committee of New Mexico. “In an unprecedented manner, they showed up in the thousands at the State Capitol and lobbied their elected officials to vote for life. As we prepare for the 2020 Legislative Session, we are again calling on all pro-life New Mexicans to speak out by first adding their name to this important petition.”

“The vast majority of New Mexicans rejected the radical abortion up-to-birth and infanticide aspects of House Bill 51, in addition to the removal of conscience protections for our state’s health care professionals that would have forced them to participate in abortions,” said Elisa Martinez, Executive Director of New Mexico Alliance for Life. “Governor Lujan Grisham can try to strong arm legislators for next year’s session, but the people of New Mexico are ready now more than ever to fight back.”
