The Democratic Party’s Platform Committee (DPPC) followed President Obama’s lead on Saturday by unanimously approving a proposal to include same-sex marriage as a plank.
The DPPC now sends the proposal to the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, N.C., for ratification next month.
This is the first time any American political party has endorsed what many call “a fairly radical redefinition of marriage,” said Gary Bauer, president of American Values.
The proposed language says the Democratic Party will “support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under law for same-sex couples.”
The platform also seeks to repeal the federal Defense of Marriage Act.
Bauer said people who support marriage should speak up for their beliefs.
“We can’t let our country sink into the kind of thing that we’ve seen in history over and over again where the mob rules, where people are afraid to speak up about fundamental beliefs of their faith,” he said. “History is full of cases of societies that experience moral renewal, and I believe that’s possible and obviously desirable here.”
