Resources for Transgenderism and Gender Identity Disorder

by Jeff Johnston

Focus on the Family and CitizenLink are committed to holding to biblical truth about male and female distinctions, while at the same time reaching out with compassion and respect to individuals, families and churches affected by transgenderism. With that in mind, the following resources may be helpful as a starting point for those looking for hope and healing for gender identity issues.

Comprehensive Counseling Services/Institute for Marital Healing

Dr. Richard Fitzgibbons has worked with thousands of people for over 30 years, dealing with marriage and family issues, forgiveness, homosexuality and Gender Identity Disorder.

The National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality

Not all those who struggle with transgender issues have same-sex attractions, and not all those who struggle with homosexuality have transgender issues. But there is some overlap between these two areas. NARTH has a network of counselors and many articles for those wanting help and understanding dealing with gender identity disorders.

Parakaleo

Parakaleo (meaning “to appeal” or “to exhort”) is a Christian ministry in the United Kingdom that reaches out to those with transgender issues. Has helpful articles and testimonies. See also the book, Transsexuality: a report by the Evangelical Alliance Policy Commission for a philosophical, medical, ethical and scriptural evaluation of this issue (N.B., in the UK the term “transsexual” is commonly used instead of “transgender”).

Trading My Sorrows

More than 20 years ago, Walt Heyer underwent “Sexual Reassignment Surgery.” In his own words, “My perfectly good body parts had been amputated. Years of looking like and living as a woman did not bring the promised treatment or relief.” He describes the journey back to manhood in his book, Trading My Sorrows and about the false promise of such surgery in Paper Genders.
