North Dakota Governor Burgum Signs #SaveGirlsSports Laws

North Dakota is the 20th state to legally reserve school sports competitions for females

Yesterday, North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum signed two bills – HB 1249 and HB 1489 – which together ensure that female sports competitions are reserved just for females from kindergarten through college. North Dakota is the 20th state with Save Girls’ Sports legal protections.

Meridian Baldacci, Spokesperson for Family Policy Alliance, said:

“North Dakota has joined the growing chorus of states affirming that female athletes should grow up with a level playing field, in life and in sports. And, sending a bold statement, North Dakota has done so just after President Biden’s administration announced a proposal intended to target states with such protections. It’s yet another reminder that the Biden Administration is woefully out of touch with the American public’s sensibilities about protecting women and children.

“When males are allowed to compete in female sports competitions, they can and do take championship titles and other elite opportunities that were meant for girls. But in North Dakota, female athletes from kindergarten to college can know that they have a level playing field, and a fair shot at the opportunities meant just for them.

We are grateful for the work of our friends at North Dakota Family Alliance who helped make this important step possible, and we commend Governor Burgum and the North Dakota legislature for their willingness to stand with female athletes.”

In protecting female athletes, North Dakota joins Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Montana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and West Virginia. Many of these states, including North Dakota, extend protections for female athletes who have achieved even higher levels of competition at the collegiate level.
