BREAKING: Indiana Legislature Overrides Governor to Make #SaveGirlsSports Law

Indiana is the seventeenth state with a law reserving school sports competitions for females, and the third this year to override their governor on the issue

Today, the Indiana legislature overrode the Governor’s veto of their state’s law to Save Girls’ Sports, making Indiana the seventeenth state to ensure that female school sports competitions are reserved for females.

Meridian Baldacci, Spokesperson for Family Policy Alliance, said:

“Today, the Indiana legislature has demonstrated what is becoming increasingly clear: Americans support fair sports for female athletes, and they’ll do what it takes to ensure a level playing field. We applaud bill sponsors Rep. Michelle Davis and Sen. Stacey Donato for leading this charge, and we thank those who chose to do the right thing in this vote.

“Indiana is part of a larger story: that of Americans across the country beginning to say, ‘Enough is enough. Even in the face of pressure, we will protect female athletes and ensure they have a level playing field.’ As of today, girls in one in three states have laws protecting their athletic opportunities.

“We are grateful for the work of our friends at Indiana Family Institute, whose tireless work and leadership made this important step possible, and we commend the Indiana legislature for their courageous willingness to stand with female Hoosiers across the state.”

In protecting female athletes, Indiana joins Idaho (the first state to protect girls’ sports), along with Arkansas, Mississippi, Montana, Alabama, Tennessee, South Dakota, West Virginia, Texas, Florida, Iowa, Utah, Oklahoma, Arizona, Kentucky, and South Carolina.

Indiana is the third state this year to override a Governor’s veto in order to protect female sports. The legislatures of Utah and Kentucky earlier overrode their own governors to protect female athletes.
